Another job cut and this time by Sun Microsystems

By Praveen Edburg | Sunday, November 16, 2008

Yet another workforce reduction has been announced by another technology company. And this time its the turn of Sun Microsystems.

Sun Microsystem has announced that around 15-18 % of its workforce will be reduced and thereby job cuts for around 6,000 of its employees. They have also announced that they are restructuring their software operations.

The situation in the major companies in the middle of this credit crunch and financial crisis seems to be a very desperate move to cut spending in view of diminished projects and sales. This is causing panic among the other employees making them fear that they may be next in the list of job cuts.

The condition is getting worse each day as one by one many of the companies are announcing job layoffs and decreased profits if not in the verge of bankruptcy. The condition is still worse in the case of those looking for a job or waiting to join in one of these companies.

If the current situation does not improve in the forth coming months, I think many countries may face unemployment on a large scale.

IITs loosing their shine ?

By Praveen Edburg | Friday, October 17, 2008

There was a time when the IITs(Indian Institute of Technology) were considered as one of the best Engineering colleges throughout the world with its generation of quality Engineers, excellent infrastructure and world-class lecturers. Even now it retains some of the fame but I feel that the standard is degrading gradually lately.

The most important reason of the excellence of these institutions is the isolation from politics and generous funding from the central government. But now one of the reasons is fading away with government intervention in the operations of the institutions.

Firstly some long time ago, the politicians brought in seat reservations based on caste systems as they wanted to show favor to those people by reserving seats for them. Whether this is right or not is debatable but I feel this reduces the standard of the students joining the institutions by selecting students not entirely based on their knowledge.

Then came some drastic decision to open a bunch of several other IITs even when the required infrastructure in not in place. Many new ones were started without and separate facilities and were made to share resources of the existing IITs. Under all possibilities I feel that this is a very bad decision affecting the entire IIT fame and quality.

Recently there were many instances by the IIT authorities that the students were not socializing enough and not participated in cultural and festivals. They instead preferred to browse the internet, play games online and blogging.

By all means, I don’t want to see the IITs that I dreamt of joining one day when I was in my high school, to lose their shine and become yet another Engineering college without the quality of a world class institution.

Recruited but still unemployed

By Praveen Edburg | Thursday, October 09, 2008

As of today, a lot of young engineers have been recruited by the major IT firms but so far only a few students who studied in one of the top colleges have actually joined the respective organizations. The others have been simply made to wait for them to call. Its already been 5 months and it is predicted to last for a few more months at least.

Some attribute this situation as due to the US recession and the IT firms major dependence on US. It may be also due to the inability to forecast the events by these firms. But many say this is due to the ruthless increase in head count performed by the companies by recruiting in bulk well in advance of almost a year. Following this, these companies may follow a demand-supply process in recruiting people i.e. recruiting people only when there is a job vacancy/demand for them and also in the required minimum number of recruited candidates.

The situation is almost equal in all IT majors like Infosys, Wipro, TCS, CTS, Sathyam, HCL, Caritor, etc. They have called only people from the top educational institutes as of now. The fate of others or when they will be called is little known. The situation is worse in the cases of Sathyam, Caritor and CTS where only a handful of people have been called and there is no proper response or communication from the respective HRs about the joining dates.

While companies like TCS and Wipro have been communicative about the DOJs, some others like Infosys and HCL have been giving online training till the recruited candidates are called. Very little is known about the other firms with no proper communication from their sides which is what the recruited candidates are expecting at the least.

Nursing Education program

By Praveen Edburg | Wednesday, October 08, 2008

Recently my cousin wanted to enroll in a nursing program and we we tried to find more information about the various nursing related schools. We were also more concerned about the future scope in this field and the various job opportunities that are available.

We actually got fed up of not finding any valuable information on this and we almost decided not to enter into this field. But it was then that we found this website and had some valuable information on the various nursing school available.

This site Nursing-School.org has a really large directory of various nursing related schools available. Additionally it also has a lot of useful information about the various heath care and nursing related job opportunities. And this has really helped my cousin in her career related information and is now confident of knowing enough stuff about this field and about the kind of jobs that she should expect. This should help anyone find the right nursing related educated program.
