Nvidia has been recently showcasing about its new mobile platform code named as Tegra. To describe it shortly, I could say that it is one hellulava of a device. But this is just a prototype and there is no information as to who all will use this platform, it launch dates, the price and the power requirements.
The Tegra platform is a 'computer on a chip' design which integrates the CPU, GPU, northbridge, southbridge and memory into a single package. Three variants are specified so far - Tegra APX 2500, 600 and 650.
To begin with it does look cool will a big screen but seems a bit bulky. But who cares about size since it is a handheld device that can put some laptops to shame.
The processor is powered by a 600 MHz ARM11 type. The graphic capability of the device is powered by a low power Nvidia chip.
The device can support 720p (1280 x 720) video resolution for TV-out and can have an HDMI port onboard. This should provide an excellent gaming device which rumors say that it can play some years old games very well and can act as HD ready output to displays.
So far all the hype that it has created has been amazing but very little is known with the power requirements of this monster handheld and the price at which it will retail. But rest assured it will be the start of powerful devices comparable to a laptop in the size of a handheld.
