Owing to the economic crisis and cheaper oil, it seems the electric cars are running out of business. There was a time when the oil prices were close to $150 a gallon and many were speculating about electric cars becoming the immediate future and cars running on oil to be low on demand. But the rapid price reductions in oil prices and economic turmoil has created a rather unpleasant experience for the electric vehicles.
People who have been cribbing about oil prices have gone back to their old oil consuming ways as their prices have fallen to about $50 a gallon. This has made electric cars which are expensive, less powerful and not so mature to be unattractive options to the buyer.
The companies and dealers who had invested heavily in the electric cars have been repenting their decisions.
The traditional oil consuming cars have also declined due to the economic downturn but it is not as drastic as that of the electric cars.
The popular upcoming electric variants are the GM Volt, upcoming Toyota Prius upgrade and a few others. It is to be noted that GM, Ford and Chrysler are on the verge of bankruptcy if the bailout plans doesn't work out.
Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch its next-gen Alto named as the A-Star on 19th November.
The pricing of the car is yet to be known as many think that it may be priced closer to the Hyundai i10. I would say that pricing it closer to the Santro or the Wagon-R/Zen Estilo can make it a run away success.
The key features going for the car along with the much better styling is the newly developed K-series engine developed by Suzuki. It is a 1.0 litre engine producing about 65 bhp and claims to have very good fuel efficiency (about 19-20 kmpl) and less emmisions.
The looks are newer and funky although I felt that the concept model of the car was simply amazing.
Fiat really made a mess of itself so far with regards to its reputation in the Indian market. They had some crucial shortcomings like service, spare parts availability and resale value. Till now it doesn’t have its own service centers but has been in partnership with TVS (a really bad move) and now with TATA motors where their showrooms and service centers are shared.
So far their cars haven't been well received by the Indian customers especially after it screwed up its brand name. Their cars like Fiat Palio haven’t seen much success despite being a good competitor.
Meanwhile the engines which they supply to Maruti and Tata stables have been a huge hit and probably one of the best engines around in that range. So Fiat is looking to capitalize on that and offer a new range of cars to develop a good reputation in the Indian market.
It recently launched the Fiat 500 as a CBU in hope of a brand building strategy. It reduced the price of Palio cars by quite a good margin for the festival season (or may be as a clearance sale). Next it is set to launch the C-segment car Linea very soon and following that will be the Hatch-back Grand Punto both of which has been great cars in terms of looks and performance wise.
But judging by Fiat’s record so far, one can only hope that they don’t mess up anything with these great cars. So far the news about these cars has been positive about these cars but still one has the gut feeling that Fiat does something messy. But if it does well with these cars, then they are sure to be on a roll in the forthcoming years.
