Recently I faced a lot of problems while performing currency conversions. I have a few dollars in paypal and when i tried to convert the US dollars into Indian rupees, the conversion amount was a lot less than the actual value.
I had to withdraw the funds to my bank account and so I had the option of letting paypal do the conversion or to transfer the funds to my bank cards and let them do the conversion. But to transfer funds to the debit card, paypal charges a sum of $5 and I was not sure about the conversion amount that will be used by the bank. So I decided to use paypal's conversion as I feel that for small amounts, paypal conversion is better and for large amounts, the conversion by the bank should be better.
