The wait for 3G lengthens

By Praveen Edburg | Wednesday, January 07, 2009

In India, 3G has not yet been made available and mobile users are left with incredibly slow GPRS/EDGE network speeds. Although the buzz about the launch of 3G has been going around for a very long time, it is yet to be materialized.

So far only the government owned companies like MTNL and BSNL have been allocated the spectrum. The rest of the private players are to be allocated he spectrum on basis of a auction which has been already been delayed a few times and the date which was set to be January has also been delayed as the government has suggested a new revision in the increase of the prices.

It seems quite unfair to the private run companies as the state run ones will have the benefit of a quicker launch and lower expense in buying the spectrum.

Only MTNL has so far tested the 3G operation and launched it a few weeks back in the nation capitol Delhi and is yet to be made available in a wide network.
