Bigger...bigger...and even bigger memory

There seems to be a memory size explosion taking place at present. The size of memory used for storage as well as those for RAM used in devices seems to be doubling every year or so.No I am not talking about the time when 16/32 KB RAM used to be the norm for computers. Its in the past few years.

About a couple years ago the prices of a 1 GB pen drive ( thumb/flash drive ) used to be around Rs.750. But now with the same amount one could buy a 8 GB drive. Similar is the case with memory cards. My microSD card of size 1 GB used to be around Rs.600 when I bought it a year ago. Now its Rs.150 !!

While I was on the hunt for a new mobile phone, I was surprised to see devices with 128 MB RAM as normal and ones with 256 MB are yet-to-be launched. That was the amount of RAM I had in my desktop computer some 4 years ago ( and some even have only that much at present too ). And for desktops 4 GB of RAM seems to be the norm these days.

Coming to storage again, I thought Rs.2250 for a 250 GB hard drive was a great deal about 6 months back. But now I am seeing the 500 and 640 GB drives at about Rs.3,xxx which almost makes mine look antique.

Now-a-days a mobile phone is considered high end only if it has around 16 GB or more memory in them.Yes I know Moore's law but seeing the progress, I think devices would become absolete once every 3 years or so.
