Well Microsoft has decided to name its next version of Windows which was codenamed as Windows 7 as….well…Windows 7. It was formerly called as Blackcomb and Vienna which I like a lot better that this numerical name. This is quite unusual compared to the previous naming schemes of Microsoft.
Microsoft has decided not to disclose too much information on its next generation OS similar to what it did to Windows Vista.
The core part of the OS i.e. the kernel is supposedly the same as that of Vista, only a bit more refined. The user interface is expected to be almost the same with support for touch screen devices and not many changes are expected. The applications like paint and WordPad will supposedly have the ribbon interface that is present in current Office applications. It has to be seen whether the features that were cancelled for Vista such as new file system (WinFS), etc are implemented in this version.
The launch date is rumored to be after the second half of next year and the beta versions to start next year.
