Hard disk prices on the decline

I have recently seeing the hard disks of capacity of over 250 GB have decreased very rapidly. There used to be a time when 250 and 500 GB hard disks were considered huge. Now a days even 1 TB is quite common and 500 GB has become the norm.

I had bought a 250 GB hard drive for about Rs.2500 about 8 months ago. A couple of months before, my friend bought a 500 GB hard drive of 16 MB cache for about Rs.4000. But now the 500 GB SATA2 32 MB cache sells for a mere Rs.3000. I was surprised when I bought this drive yesterday.

People have been storing more junk in their hard disks recently. Today's PC games require about 10 GB hard disk space for a single game. And the OSes of today have also become bigger in size. Windows Vista takes about 8 GB in its first installation. And with several operating systems installed at the same, which is the norm these days, the storage requirement has also increased many times. Although it makes no sense to store a HD movie in hard disk, it is worth mentioning that high definition movies take upto 20 GB for a single movie.

With these cheap storage solutions, I am thinking of storing my OS and important data in a 250 GB hard disk to avoid the risks of data getting corrupt in RAID configuration and then RAID some 2 500 GB hard drives dedicated for games and such to achieve better performance.
